Kelly Deters - Fall 2007 Re: VW10FC

My total farm is 5100 acres with 3500 acres being lighter sandy abrasive soil and the remaining acres are heavy clay.

I have used VW points for four years starting with the carbide on the nose only. These were better than the original flexi-coil gumbo tips that would wear out in approximately 1000 acres. Then I went to the VW8FC points with carbide on the wings. These were better, but now I am using the VW10FC with heavy carbide on the nose and wings. I can see these tips lasting 40-50,000 acres. I tried them on half of my air drill - a JD 1820-52 ft behind the tractor and I saw no wear in my season.

Another plus was in the heavy gumbo land the VW10FC moved enough soil that there was no plugging of the seed boot. With the older VW points I had plugging in the mud as this spring was extremely wet on the heavy soils. The scouring of the points is as good or better than any other points I have used in the past, even in gumbo when nothing really worked well.

The service you get from VW Manufacturing Ltd is quality workmanship and honesty. If there were to be a problem, it will be fixed. I had some failure of tips with carbide falling off due to heavy rocks and VW Manufacturing fixed or replaced these tips with no charge to me. It would be nice if all companies respond to problems with this attitude. I will be ordering more VW10FC drill points to finish off my drill for next season.

PS: These VW10FC full carbide drill points might last longer than I think. Except for behind the tractor tracks, I may never have to replace the tip again. Thank you.
